Which version of the Parallel Universe Patch are you using? In case you are not already using 1.0.3 it might be worth a try, as it should provide better error reports (guru dialog) in certain cases, which would help with debugging the root cause of the crash you are experiencing.

HDD is not a problem, the patch works fine also with HDDs, its just that having a SSD reduces loading stutters.
